Special Guards perform tasks related to the protection of vulnerable targets and patrols. They are deployed to staff special police services, to form special units and temporarily serve in other positions, to combat certain forms of crime as well as to investigate the whereabouts of criminals on the lost or missing people.
They constitute a special category of Hellenic Police`s staff (Law 2734/1999).
Special Guards are recruited using a points-based system and must be Greek citizens (male and female), high school graduates, not aged over 28 and having completed their military service. The following criteria are used to determine their selection: secondary school grades, knowledge of foreign languages and (for male) completion of military service preferably as Reserve Officers, or in special services of the Armed Forces or as volunteers with a 5-year service record.
