Alien Issues

The Greek police exercise specific responsibilities on aliens issues. Competent Police Services are, because of competence reasons, the Departments of Aliens for the regions of Attica and Thessaloniki and Security Sub-directorates, Safety Departments and Police Stations, which handle aliens issues, for the rest of Greece.

The responsibilities of the Greek Police on aliens’ issues are:

  • The settlement of citizens of member states of EU, the countries of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation.
  • The settlement of Aliens of Hellenic Descent, coming from Albania, Turkey and countries of former USSR.
  • The implementation of existing provisions, concerning citizenship and issues of the Aliens of Hellenic Descent, as well as cooperation with other competent national authorities to deal with the problems of the Aliens of Hellenic Descent or to regulate issues of citizenship.
  • Notifying the relevant departments of the Ministry of the Interior of the reasons of public order and security that may exist against the aliens who have applied for citizenship.
  • The examination and processing of the backlog concerning applications for international protection that have been submitted by third-country nationals, before 07-06-2013.
  • The examination of requests for family union and family reunification of beneficiaries of international protection, wh ο have been granted international protection status by the Authorities of the Greek Presidential Decree 114/2010.
  • To provide documents relating to pending cases of beneficiaries and applicants for international protection and beneficiaries of humanitarian status according to article 22 of the Greek Law 4375/2016, as amended by article 96 paragraph 2 of the Greek Law 4485/2017.

The Greek Police issues the following documents concerning aliens:

  • «Registration Certificate of Citizen of Member State of European Union» and «Certificate of Permanent Residence of Citizen of Member State of European Union» to citizens of Member States of European Union, the countries of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation.
  • “Special Identity Card of Aliens of Hellenic Descent” and “Residence Permit” to the aliens of Hellenic Descent, coming from Albania and Turkey and “Special Identity Card of Aliens of Hellenic Descent” to the aliens of Hellenic Descent, coming from countries of former USSR.
  • «Alien’s card requesting political asylum» for the aliens that lodged an application for international protection to the competent Police Authorities until 06-06-2013, which is valid for six (6) months and is renewed until the examination of the request for international protection (“Pink Card”).
  • “Residence permit” (“white card”) and “Special Identity Card for Political Refugee” (“yellow card”), to beneficiaries of refugee status, of five or three-years duration and “Residence permit” to beneficiaries of subsidiary protection status, of two years duration, according to the Greek Presidential Decree 96/2008, as valid and the Greek Law 4636/2019.
  • “Residence permit for family members of a third country citizen”, who is beneficiary of international protection, according to the Greek Presidential Decree 96/2008, as valid and of the Greek Law 4636/2019, respectively, in cases of family union and family reunification.
  • “Residence permit on humanitarian grounds”, lasting up to two years, according to article 22 of the Greek Law 4375/2016, as amended by article 96, paragraph 2 of the Greek Law 4485/2017.
  • Travel Document (T.D.V.) for beneficiaries of refugee status and, under certain conditions, for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection and applicants for international protection, according to article 25 of the Greek Law 4636/2019, whose application for international protection was lodged until 06-06-2013.
