CC-DRIVER: Understanding the drivers of cybercriminality, and new methods to prevent, investigate and mitigate cybercriminal behaviour

The CC-DRIVER research project, which is evaluated and funded by the European Commission under EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, will use a multidisciplinary approach from the domains of psychology, criminology, anthropology, neurobiology and cyberpsychologywith the aim of investigating, identifying, understanding and explaining drivers of new forms of criminality. It will focus on human factors that determine criminal behaviours such as cyber juvenile delinquency and adolescent hacking . Scientific investigation of drivers into cybercrime, impact of online disinhibition and the effect of youth decision-making processes will inform our evidence-based intervention, mitigation and deterrence strategies. These measures will be designed to educate regarding criminality and to divert youth from crime.

The project will focus on:

  • Investigating, identifying, and explaining drivers of new forms of cybercriminality. Specifically focusing on understanding human factors that determine criminal behaviours, online disinhibition , and youth decision-making processes.
  • Creating an online questionnaire that young people and organisations can use to assess their vulnerability to cybercrime, an online assessment/awareness/educational tool for youths, a parent/caregiver/educator/other stakeholders “Pathways to Cybercrime” checklist (PCC) which will indicate youth behaviours or attitudes that may facilitate cybercriminality. Α lso a self-assessment questionnairewill be developed for SMEs, civil society organisations, and others can use to check their vulnerability to cybercrime attacks.
  • Supporting the EU Security Union by developing policy responses for Member States to assist harmonisation in tackling cybercrime.
  • Maintaining European societal values, fundamental rights, and applicable legislation within the proposed work.

In a nutshell, it will deliver opportunities for EU LEAs to exchange knowledge and experiences with a view to fostering common European approaches and strengthening the European Security Union as an area of freedom, justice, security and, importantly, opportunity.
